Identification and Gap analysis of Key Biodiversity Areas

1The purpose of these guidelines is to explain how the identification, prioritization and gap analysis of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) can help fulfill the following mandate of the Convention on Biological Diversity: “comprehensive, effectively managed, and ecologically representative national and regional systems of protected areas”.

These guidelines therefore provide guidance for identifying priorities for both expanding and strengthening the global protected area system, in order to ensure its representativeness, comprehensiveness and long-term effectiveness.
